In an increasingly urbanized world, many people find themselves commuting long distances to work each day. These daily trips are not only increasingly expensive due to rising gas prices, but they are also are collectively a large source of fossil fuel emissions. Road transportation accounts for 26% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions and 27 million of the 33 million vehicles on the roads are cars. Liftshare is a UK-based social enterprise that aims to solve both these problems in a truly social way; by connecting people to share their rides.
Liftshare was created in 1998 after a student, Ali Clabburn, experienced ride-sharing in Germany and realized there there was an opportunity to offer the same service in the UK. The organization’s main goal is to provide a car-sharing opportunity for everyone who wants one, filling some of the 38 million empty car seats on UK roads every day and even getting some of those cars to stay home. Liftshare is an online platform where individuals can log on for free as drivers or as passengers to find people to share their commute. You don’t even have to own a car to be on Liftshare as many people are simply looking for others to share their drive with. Drivers and passengers work out the details of their commute between themselves and Liftshare helps calculate how much passengers should contribute to cover the cost of each drive. This service is available to individuals for free thanks to Liftshare’s corporate clients who purchase customized carpooling organization for their employees.
With 500,000 individual members and over 700 corporate customers, Liftshare estimates they are taking 78,000 car trips off the road each day and saving 291,200 tons of CO2 each year. Though based in the UK, Liftshare journeys have been logged around the world. With a growing number of commuters looking for more environmentally friendly and budget friendly ways to get to work, Liftshare has the potential to become a truly global network of ride sharers.
